The History of the Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center
We are passionate about what we do — it’s in our roots. Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center was originally founded by five Long Island women in 1988. Our founders are like millions of other Americans impacted by Alzheimer’s — they had a parent or grandparent with Alzheimer’s disease and shared the frustration of not knowing where to turn for much-needed help.
Out of this dire need, our founders decided to be their own solution, and the Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center was started. Today, we’ve spent 30 years providing supportive community-based services to Alzheimer’s families in Long Island.
We take a considerable amount of pride in our pioneering role in the development of cutting edge services that foster the independence, dignity, well-being, and safety of individuals with Alzheimer’s and related forms of dementia. All of our services are uniquely geared to aid in the prevention of premature nursing home placement. Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center’s programs through the Memory Fitness Center offer help and hope for families grappling with Alzheimer’s disease.
Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center's services initially included an information-line, production of the area's first comprehensive resource directory and a social adult day program. Since then Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center's services have grown, and our programs are being replicated by other groups throughout the United States to benefit those impacted by Alzheimer's disease.
Helping Families & Caregivers Along Every Step of the Way
Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center helps seniors and families cope with the mental health issues such as depression, isolation, grief and sleep disorders that are commonly experienced by Alzheimer’s families. Social workers help caregivers – typically an elderly spouse – develop a support network and coping skills, maintain a positive mental attitude and ensure they remember to take care of their own health needs as well.
Caregivers are frequently so consumed with the care needs of their loved one with Alzheimer's they neglect their own health needs. Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center’s programs for those with Alzheimer's disease provide the support needed to maintain their independence and well-being in the community for as long as possible while avoiding costly, nursing home placement.
Making an Impact One Person, One Family, One Community at a Time
We are passionate about what we do, and we love to hear our caregivers share their experiences. We’re determined to make an impact in the lives of those living with Alzheimer's in the Nassau County, Queens County, and Long Island area — one person, one family, one community at a time.
Hear what some of our previous caregivers have to say about our programming and services provided:
I am compelled to put in writing the experience I had with Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center day care.If you have a significant person in your life that has dementia, there is a special place he or she can go to get stimulated, learn and be happy. My experience has been so positive (my husbands too) I feel the need to share it. You are not alone, there is a truly professional and caring day care to bring your love one to. I am amazed at their knowledge and caring. Everyone is special to them! They put joy into the lives of people that would normally sit home staring or watching tv. They know the importance of music and arts. I believe their music program is by far the best. There is live music. You see people dancing or clapping their hands with the staff enjoying every minute of it. A quiet room is always available when needed. They structure activities for the individual. A full staff is there for you to discuss your love one. I believe the people that go to this day center feel cared for and loved. The staff seems capable of handling all situations. To see my husband happy and looking forward to going there is more than I could ever hope for.
Wow! What great staff and great new place for Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center. I'm so glad that my mom is part of this wonderful program! My dad talked about the visit all weekend. He enjoyed it as well as did I.
