Your mind is beautiful, and the Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center Brain Fitness Workshops are engineered to help you keep your mind in the best possible condition and protect your precious memories. Although most of our programs are designed for those in early stage, moderate stage, or late stage Alzheimer’s disease, our Brain Fitness Workshops are for adults without a diagnosis of memory impairment or Alzheimer’s disease.
With curriculum based on clinical research and trials, the Brain Fitness Workshop is for those looking to be proactive in maintaining and enhancing their cognitive function. In addition to stimulating the areas of the brain that are most sensitive to age-related decline, Brain Fitness Workshops encourage participants to develop new social interactions.
The Brain Fitness Workshop is best suited for older individuals who do not have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. We also encourage care partners, spouses, family members, and neighbors to attend the workshop. It’s packed full of fun and stimulating activities to help whip your brain into shape and get you thinking on your feet — sometimes literally. You’ll enjoy a session full of stimulating brain games and activities that are fun for all ages.
A number of studies suggest staying mentally active and maintaining social connections as you age may work to reduce the likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease. Although experts are not clear on why activities like Brain Fitness Workshops may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, many believe it’s due to the way mental and social stimulation strengthen connections between nerve cells in the brain.
At Long Island Alzheimer's and Dementia Center we engineer our programs based on research and science. While several studies have been conducted linking the importance of programs like our Brain Fitness Workshops, we’ll reference one published by AARP in 2012 by scientists at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California.
This study involved 65 healthy older individuals who demonstrated no Alzheimer’s symptoms. Those participating in the study agreed to brain scans to detect the presence of beta amyloid protein (the tell-tale sign of Alzheimer’s disease). The results suggested the participants who engaged with more mental activity in their lives showed consistently lower buildup of protein in their brains.
Additional research suggests the more education you receive, the lower your Alzheimer’s disease risk is. This has caused researchers to agree on the theory that more mental activity develops “reserves” in the brain, which potentially allows you to tolerate the buildup of this protein. More research suggests intellectual stimulation may be the primary factor that keeps the disease from developing.
